R&B has really evolved over the past few years, and we’ve seen the rise of alternative R&B especially. Artists such as Frank Ocean, SZA, and Kelela deviate from the contemporary R&B and blend in ingredients from hip-hop, pop, and electronic genres. In fact, I can’t really define alternative R&B and I think that’s part of the reason why it is so popular and so good. It’s a genre that is always changing and evolving, and that works for me.

Here are 7 of the best alternative R&B songs out right now #alternativernb #newmusic Click To Tweet

1. Ebhoni – “What You Want”

Ebhoni hails from Toronto, which is no surprise. Toronto is a huge hub for alternative R&B right now. I’m wondering how it’s possible that this track isn’t everywhere yet, such a beautiful pop/R&B banger with the perfect amount of sass. The 17-year-old has a bright future ahead of her.

2. Kaiit – “Natural Woman”

Kaiit’s music is drawing on so many different influences, I kind of hate to even put it in one genre, but alas, this is the world we live in today. “Natural Woman” is a blend of R&B, hip-hop, and jazz, which results in a massive banger that we can’t help but relax and groove to whenever the track comes on. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this young talent from Melbourne, we can’t wait to see what Kaiit does next.

3. Lion Babe – “Hit The Ceiling”

This song is everything. Definitely a feel-good summer banger that incorporates R&B, soul, and electronic genres.

4. Sabrina Claudio – “Belong To You”

Hailing from Miami, Florida, Sabrina Claudio is making waves in the scene with her catchy blend of low-key R&B and electronic vibes. This one is for the grown and sexy.

5. Kali Uchis (featuring Jorja Smith) – “Tyrant”

A self-described “post apocalyptic love song”, Uchis returns better than ever with her first solo work since 2016. The Colombian born singer is also a producer and director, inspired by a wide range of artists and styles. Wondering how UK R&B songstress Jorja Smith got on the track? On Genius Uchis states, “I had actually never even met her before. I just sent her the song and then, she sent me the verse back and I was like, ‘This is amazing.’ And then, I was kind of worried, because I usually don’t work with people that I’ve never met before. I usually have to connect with you as a person before I’m going to make music with you, but I got lucky with her because then when I met her, we actually ended up becoming good friends and talking shit over wine. And, she ended up just being really cool.”

6. Kelela – “LMK”

The latest rising star in alternative R&B, Kelela delivers with the lead single from her upcoming debut album, Take Me Apart, set to be released on October 6th. Guess we’ll just keep this on a loop until then.

7. Bosco – “Cruel”

This is one of those tracks that almost immediately makes me become obsessed with the artist. I want to know everything about the artist, especially about what is coming next. Her latest project, b., dropped on August 11th and you should definitely check it out. I still especially love this track with its 90’s flavor, layered textures, and sensual summer vibes. Keep your eyes on Bosco.

Cheers,
