1. RAYANA JAY (Richmond, California)

First up we’re showing a bit of homegrown Bay Area love to Rayana Jay. Jay is able to deliver lyrically, telling an honest and vulnerable story with the expertise of an old-soul. The 23-year-old R&B/soul singer-songwriter started singing in the choir. She released an EP last year and her latest EP, Morning After, was just released in September of this year. I can’t stop listening to the effortlessly cool “Sunkissed” (below). I’m really excited to see what will be next for Rayana Jay, definitely one to watch.

Especially bangin’ if you enjoy Amy Winehouse, Jorja Smith, or Ray BLK.

2. VANJESS (Rancho Cucamonga, California)

Also in the R&B/soul genre are VanJess, sisters born in Nigeria and raised in California. VanJess first made a name for themselves through YouTube covers, and are garnering even more attention with their original material. Last year, they released “Touch The Floor” featuring Masego, and this year they are back with “Favorite” and “Through Enough” (below).

Especially bangin’ if you’re into Nao, St. Beauty, or 90’s R&B. Add VanJess to your R&B and Future Soul playlists.

3. LEILA DEY (Toronto, Canada)

Especially bangin’ if you’re into Tinashe, Kehlani, or Lion Babe.

Leila’s music is a blend of alternative R&B, soul, and hip-hop. If you’ve been following this blog and listening to the music I share, you are probably aware that I’m a sucker for artists that blend genres together. It’s a true art form and a beautiful thing. Dey excels in this area, which is probably why I haven’t stopped listening to her music since I discovered her.

Start with “Vibe” then move onto “3:44” and then a song from her latest release below.

Follow Her: Facebook. Spotify. Soundcloud.

4. SAATSUMA (Melbourne, Australia)

You can go ahead and add Saatsuma to all of your dance/electronic playlists. The duo is a perfect match; Memphis LK’s vocals complement and float over Cesar Rodrigues’ immaculate production and infectious beats. Start with “Floating” then move on to “Isolate“. Trust me, you’ll be hooked. Be sure to check out their debut EP, Overflow, which is out now.

For fans of Alice Ivy, Little Dragon, and FKA Twigs.

5. RACHEL FOXX (London, England)

Another one for my R&B/soul fans out there – damn, I really got y’all this month! London R&B singer Rachel Foxx is about to be huuuuuuge. Remember, you heard it here first 😉

In an email to The Fader, Foxx explained what her latest single, “Happen To Me”, is all about:

“This song is about being busy with life and still falling for someone — this person happens to be a friend, and it definitely was not in your plan or intentions. Its just like Damn…Do I really like you? How did this happen? Why now? I love this song so much, it’s so fun.”
