1. KAIIT (Melbourne, Australia)

kaiit-australia-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018The 20-year-old released her debut single, ‘Natural Woman‘, last year and it’s hard to believe that it’s her first single as she masterfully blends R&B, hip-hop, and jazz. The result is a massive tune that we can’t help but relax and vibe to whenever the track comes on. Her second single, ‘2000 N Somethin’ (below), is still on heavy rotation over here at HGB and was a standout track for 2017. To say that we’re excited to hear even more from Kaiit would be quite the understatement. Keep your eyes on this one.

Especially bangin’ if you enjoy SZA, Jorja Smith, and Amy Winehouse.

2. WAFIA (Brisbane, Australia)

wafia-australia-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018Wafia was born in the Netherlands and raised amongst Syrian and Iraqi culture and is also a queer artist. She began to write songs as an escape from studying biomedicine at university. Signed to forward-thinking label Future Classic, Wafia frequently collaborates with labelmate Ta-Ku, including on her debut single ‘Heartfelt’. Her latest EP, VIII, features standout tracks ‘83 Days‘, ‘Bodies‘ and ‘Only Love’ (below). What we love most about Wafia is her ability to create upbeat, accessible and empowering pop that is often about dark subject matter. She has a unique story and perspective and we’re damn happy that she’s singing about it.

3. ALICE IVY (Melbourne, Australia)

alice-ivy-australia-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018The 24-year-old Melbourne artist/producer is what you would call a “genre-defying” artist, though I guess if I had to choose something I’d say her music resembles electronic soul, and so much more. We loved her jazzy summer anthem, ‘Be Friends‘, and are obsessed with her latest release- her debut album titled I’m Dreaming. We imagine you’ll be hearing her name a lot more in 2018. Alice Ivy is making moves and definitely one to add to your rotation.

For fans of  J-Dilla, Confidence Man, and Saatsuma.

4. OKENYO (Sydney, Australia)

“I’m a very busy woman with a lot on my plate,” states Sydney’s latest emerging hip-hop/R&B artist OKENYO on the stand out single ‘Woman’s World’. And definitely check the rework featuring fellow Aussies Miss Blanks and Jesswar ‘Woman’s World 2.0‘ and you’ve found your newest unapologetic women’s anthem. Easily moving from hip-hop to R&B to a bit of everything in between, OKENYO just opened up for Billie Eilish in Australia and plans to release her EP The Wave early next month. In the meantime, she’s blessed us with the fun and bassy single ‘ISO’, that she says has, “been so fun playing live and it gives you a taste of my upcoming EP co-produced by Lionel Towers and myself.” We can’t wait for more.

Especially bangin’ if you’re into Janelle Monae, Ray BLK, or Sampa the Great.

5. ZELLOW (Melbourne, Australia)

zellow-australia-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018It’s no secret that we are massive fans of Zellow here at HGB. Her sound is heavily influenced by soul, vocal harmonies, and electronic music. I think that’s what first drew me in; how Zellow is able to take something so familiar and make it sound so fresh. The deep and brooding build-up of ‘Be Down, the jazzy and ethereal ‘On You, this is just the beginning. The other thing I love about Zellow is how each song of hers is a journey, a journey through a beautiful soundscape. And her lyrics or vocal samples tell us the story of said journey. This lovely lady is extremely talented and on that coveted edge of being the next big thing. If you wanna know even more, peep our interview with Zellow here.

Especially bangin’ if you enjoy Tycho, yaeji, and Kaytranada.
