For the last few editions, I decided to switch it up and focus on 5 new artists — all from the UK and Canada, all helping to define the sound of 2018. So today we’re taking it to our own backyard in the states to get to know 5 emerging artists ahead of the game. Get familiar.

1. JEAN DEAUX (Chicago, Illinois)

Other-worldly and refreshing RnB/hip-hop

jean-deaux-chicago-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018You might recognize her name if you listen to Smino or Saba; she was featured on Saba’s standout track ‘Photosynthesis’ and will be joining him on tour this spring. But if you don’t know her, now is the time to get familiar. The 22-year-old singer brings other-worldly, refreshing vibes to the table and we can’t wait to hear her debut EP, set to release this summer. We love her sweet vocals and layered delivery on ‘Due To Me’ (below), produced by Lanre and the other crowd favorite, ‘Wikipedia’. Have a listen and you’ll see why she’s definitely one to watch in 2018.

Especially bangin’ if you enjoy Ravyn Lenae, Rayana Jay, and Lion Babe.

2. RAVEENA (New York City, New York)

Silky smooth ethereal RnB

Just thinking about Raveena’s music calms me down. Indian-American RnB singer Raveena emerged on the scene in 2016 with her debut single, ‘You Give Me That’. And last year she released the beautiful and exquisite debut EP, Shanti, which contained stand-out tracks ‘Sweet Time’ (watch the self-directed music video for below) and ‘If Only’. She also recently performed in Oakland at the Women in Music Festival. According to Spotify, her highest number of listeners hail from London and it’s no surprise. We all know that England has an ear for that sweet soul. It’s time we catch up. Keep your eyes on Raveena.

Especially sweet if you enjoy Corinne Bailey Rae, Joyce Wrice, and Sade.

3. CUPCAKKE (Chicago, Illinois)

Anything goes sex-positive hip-hop

cupcakke-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018Also hailing from Chi-Town is 20-year-old Cupcakke, who has been in the game for a minute but we predict this will be her breakout year. She’s been putting in work. Her debut mixtape, Cum Cake, was released in February 2016, followed by another mixtape and her debut studio album, Audacious. In 2017, she released her second studio album and tour of the same name, Queen Elizabitch, and was also featured on both of Charli XCX’s mixtapes, Number 1 Angel and Pop 2. Earlier this year, Cupcakke released her third studio album and followed up with a tour, both titled Ephorize. Pitchfork awarded the album with the publication’s “Best New Music” accolade, calling it Cupcakke’s “best album yet, with terrific production and a barrage of raps that reveal Elizabeth Harris to be far more than her hilarious and absurdly raunchy one-liners.” Take notes.

For fans of Brooke Candy, Junglepussy, and Kamaiyah.

4. DOUNIA (Queens, New York)

Not your average pop star

Step into Dounia’s world as she takes you to NY in “East Coast Hiding” or the scenic sights of Morocco in “Casablanca”. With her smooth flow, witty lyrics and unapologetic views, she is sure to make her mark. Born in Queens and raised in Morocco, she is not only an amazing lyricist and singer but an activist as well.

Especially bangin’ if you’re into Jessie Reyez, Blaise Moore, or Abra.

5. SIMPSON (Virginia)

Clever wordplay and real rhymes over old-school vibe beats

simpson-heaps-good-bangers-sound-of-2018Don’t know much about Simpson, just that we really, really like her music. ‘Switch Lanes’ is dope and ‘Radio Song’ (below) is currently stuck on repeat. It was recorded, engineered and mastered by Jesse O’Connor at Jungle City Studios. We love the sound, the flow, and we’ll be patiently awaiting what’s next.

Especially bangin’ if you enjoy Kari Faux, Junglepussy, and Kilo Kish.
